SMITH RIVER FOCUS
At High Plains Conservation District we use a focus watershed approach in our water conservation efforts. In 2025, the HPCD Board of Supervisors elected the Smith River Watershed as the district’s focus. We concentrate much of our effort and capacity in providing education opportunities, landowner assistance, and completing on the ground work in the Smith. We will be prioritizing conservation work in the Smith River and its tributaries for the next 3 to 5 years.
SMITH RIVER WATERSHED RESTORATION PLAN
In 2024, Montana Fish, Wildlife, & Parks completed the Smith River Watershed Restoration Plan (WRP). The Smith River WRP outlines problems throughout the entire watershed and proposes solutions at key areas that will benefit the Smith River.
